R. Nathan on a tour of the Shaolin Temple on Sunday. Li Kang Singaporean President S. R. Nathan said his visit to the Shaolin Temple in Henan province on Sunday was one of the highlights of his weeklong Olympic tour. The 84-year-old received a warm welcome at the Buddhist monastery, which is best known for being the home of the martial art kungfu. "I'm very glad my dream finally became a reality," Nathan told Yongxin, an abbot at the temple who led a group of monks in welcoming the president, the Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday. While at the temple, Nathan watched the monks perform their evening chants and prayers, and offered incense to the Sakyamuni Buddha. After watching a martial arts performance, Nathan said he was very interested in kungfu and the daily lives of the Shaolin monks. "It's not easy for them to clear their minds of mundane concerns and focus on kungfu," he said. But what impressed him even more was how well the temple preserves the culture of Buddhism. "That is what I appreciate the most," he said. Despite being thousands of kilometers away, the Shaolin Temple has maintained close relations with the Buddhist community in Singapore, Yongxin said. For example, a TV series entitled Shaolin Monks that was co-produced by the temple and a Singaporean media company will be broadcast later this year, he said. "I hope we can deepen our ties in the future," he said. Nathan, who flew back to Singapore yesterday, spent three days in Henan after supporting Team Singapore in Beijing. He told the Chinese press on July 28 that he would visit the Shaolin Temple after watching the stage production Shaolin in the Wind in Singapore. Nathan said he was considering sending his grandson, who is a fan of martial arts, to study kungfu at the temple. Two years ago, Russian Premier Vladimir Putin also visited Shaolin. Some reports have claimed his daughters have been trained in the ways of kungfu by a Shaolin monk. It is populated by descendants of the Bantu tribes, who migrated from the north around the 10th century and evidence of their mainly pastoral lifestyle can still be seen in the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, near the present-day town of Masvingo. The country also offers some of the best wildlife parks in southern Africa. From the forested mountains to the grasslands of Hwange National Park, from the hot Mopani Forest to the shores of Lake Kariba, they tempt tourists to explore and get close to nature. A photographic exhibition, Chinese Photographers Walking into Africa's Paradise, is on display in Beijing until August 25. It features 140 photographs by 12 photographers from the Chinese Photographers' Association, including Yu Yuntian, Jiang Jurong and Zhang Ye, who visited the local people, tribes and wild animals at Matopo National Park, Zambezi River and Victoria Falls. Besides its long history and breathtaking wildlife parks, Africa also has a long Olympic history, which is being celebrated by an Africa and Olympic Culture Exhibition at Capital Library. Using pictures, paintings, multimedia images and other means, the exhibition explores Africa's Olympic culture in depth. It documents the outstanding achievements of African athletes in previous Olympics and Paralympic Games, as well as paying tribute to their work with the International Olympic Committee. He wrote a thesis entitled "The Eight Diagrams Theory of the Universe and Modern Astronomy", which won him the French national doctorate in 1938 and shook up the world of astronomy. The Chinese picture of the Ultimate and the Eight Diagrams is still being studied by some Western scholars as a source of ancient science. It is certainly an important heritage of Chinese science and culture, though, at times, it was used for divination and other superstitious activities. Bagua Zhang Bagua Zhang is a form of traditional Chinese internal martial arts with extraordinarily unique characteristics that make it a valuable art in the world of martial arts. It originated 160 years ago and reached its peak in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Bagua conditions the body, mind and spirit with an emphasis on alternating fast and slow movements. Master Dong Haichuan was its founder and main propagator. Bagua Zhang is also a form of energy cultivation that manifests itself from the wuji state of primordial consciousness. From the primordial consciousness the taiji wheel turns, generating the realms of form with eight characteristics called trigrams. There are four cardinal and intermediate patterns of qi flow and each pattern has a direction, age, color, symbol, mantra, mudra, channel, point, form, add infintum ... and palm changes. Bagua Zhang is practiced by walking in a continual circular motion, gathering all of the energies of the eight directions; the eight palm changes create circles within the circles like the planets of the solar system rotating and revolving at the same time. Once practitioners can perform all of the eight palm changes their channels become open and they can connect with the energies of the eight directions and develop their own unique style based on their own set of circumstances and interactions with the variable energies of others who enter the Bagua sphere. Bagua Zhang is one of the three major internal styles of Chinese martial arts. It is more vigorous and physically demanding than its sister arts Taiji Quan and Qigong . The forms and postures incorporate many low-squatting stances and specialize in twisting and turning the waist, inguinal folds, legs and arms. 1 2 3 Emblems More * Dancing Beijing -- Beijing 2008 Olympic Emblem ============================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================ * Beijing Paralympics Emblem ( 07-10 ) * Environmental Emblem of Beijing 2008 ( 07-10 ) * Emblem of the Beijing Olympic Torch Relay ( 07-10 ) * Emblem of the Beijing 2008 OYC ( 07-10 ) * Emblem of the Beijing Olympic Cultural Festival ( 07-10 ) News More * New subway lines ready to roll for Olympics * The Olympic flame brings together two cultures in Qufu * Don't ask Olympic tourists age or wage * Picket spots created for Games * Wearing lucky clouds Meet in Beijing More * Dance Along the River during the Qingming Festival * Concert by Macao Chinese Orchestra * Kataklo Athletic Dance Theatre * UK Contemporary Exhibition * The Russia Star Ballet Olympic on Beijing's Axis Online Tour ============================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================ | About us | E-mail | Contact | Constructed by .cn Copyright 2003 Ministry of Culture, P.R.China.
